Brief therapy

Solution focused brief therapy - what is it and who is it for?

Solution focused brief therapy can be seen as a band aid for the mind. If you’re going through an acute crisis in life or there is something in your life that has troubled you and you’d need to accept and come to terms with then brief therapy may be your answer. You don’t need a referral, nor do you need to queue for years to have access to brief therapy.

Brief therapy lasts on average 5-20 sessions. However, my personal view is that already one session may be enough and no follow-up session are necessary. Another way to direct the mind towards finding solutions is to agree at the start a fixed number sessions for the therapeutic work.

One of the guiding principles of solution focused approach is to start focusing the mind towards the future as soon as it’s plausible. The underlying assumption here is,the it’s not beneficial to analyse the mind, like it was a broken motor and ask repeatedly why things are the way they are. These why questions take our mind to the past and help build causal relationships between past event. At same time, we may forget to ask ourselves what do we want instead now or in the future. Also, analysing the past problems and failures tends to bring us down, whereas looking towards the future, may shift the mood and open doors for more positive thoughts and opportunities for change to arise. Solution focused brief therapy is a place, where you’ll be met and accepted as you are and where you may find ways to take next steps towards the future that you desire.

During brief therapy sessions, I also utilise ideas and techniques from positive psychology, NLP and mindfulness. The brief therapy I offer does not qualify for Kela’s rehabilitation allowance and the content of the therapeutic discussions are not recorded in any IT systems. Brief therapy is suitable for individuals, couples and families.
