Shiatsu – what is it and who is it for?
Shiatsu is a holistic and gentle bodywork technique that focuses on balancing the energy flow in the meridians and bringing back the individual’s natural balance both mentally and physically. It comes from Japan and literally means pressing with fingers. The theoretical framework for shiatsu is in TCM, traditional Chinese medicine. Shiatsu is extremely relaxing and activates the parasympathetic nervous system. It is an acupressure therapy that is well suited for both emotional and physical pain and sleeping disturbances. Shiatsu is also a natural way to increase your body awareness.
Typical duration for the treatment is 60 or 90 minutes. The session starts with a short talk (usually 5-10 min) on your needs and what you’re hoping shiatsu will help you with. During the treatment the acupoints of the body are manipulated with pressure by fingers, palms and elbows together with rocking and stretches to sooth and balance the energy flow in the body. The treatment usually takes place on the floor on a futon or a padded mat. You can wear comfortable clothes, for example joggers and a long-sleeved T-shirt during the treatment.
Shiatsu is does good for anyone. If you are feeling stressed out, if your body feels tense, if you have aches and pains that don’t seem to have any physiological causes or if you feel that your body needs your attention and gentle looking after, you might like to try shiatsu. Notice, that shiatsu is not recommended if you are ill, have an acute and difficult skin inflammation or have recently been operated. When booking a time, please remember to mention any health issues I would need to know about.
